The Department of English Language and Literature of the Faculty of Foreign Languages ​​added a new one to its activities. The first one of the ASBU-IDE Colloquiums which aim to bring together students who want to specialize in the field of English Language and Literature and who want to specialize in the same field in a discussion environment, took place on April 12th 2019 at ASBU Güvercinlik Hall at 13.30. The subject of the first colloquium was Gothic Literature.

The meeting which was about the birth of Gothic literature, its basis, its characteristics, the development and diversification of gothic literature, its representations in different media and gothic literature works, was designed in two parts and bilingual. At the colloquium where two academicians and two students were speakers, academicians made presentations in English and students in Turkish. Ceylan Köşker, faculty member of Bilkent University English Language and Literature Department, made the first speech of the meeting. This comprehensive speech, which treated the emergence of gothic literature, its reasons and the first gothic literature works in the 18th century, intensified with the contributions of the audience.

The second speech of the meeting was made by Bengisu Yergök, who is one of the founders of ASBU Literature Society, 2nd grade student of English Language and Literature Department. She mentioned in her talk, the life, literary personality, general information and works of American Literature writer Edgar Allan Poe, who is also the creator of detective stories, also known as the father of gothic literature and also his works turned into a screenplay and their Turkish translations.

The first speech of the second session was made by Başak Ağın (PhD) from the Department of English Language and Literature of METU. She made researches on “post humanism” one of the new approaches of the last century and she launched forth by examining the concepts of Post human” and “post humanism”, she focused then on the emergence of these concepts, their reflections on literature and philosophy. Mert Can Firat, one of the founders of the ASBU Literature Society and student of English Language and Literature Department made the last speech of the session. He mentioned on good and bad representations of Dracula character in the cinema and cartoon world. Besides, he mentioned Marvel comic books and the adaptation of Dracula in Turkish cinema.

The meeting, attended by academicians and students from various universities in Ankara, was flourished by the questions of the audience, their approaches from various aspects and their contributions.
